Question

Indesign unable to package document X. Cannot make package

Hi Community,

Since a while I have an error when trying to package my Indesign files. An error comes up saying ''InDesign is not able to package the file, cannot make package folder''. It doesn't say why it is not possible to make the package. I did notice that I need to save the file once more while making the package (even if it was saved before trying to make the package).

My installed version is up to date with the Creative cloud app.

Can someone help me solve this issue?

@Peter Spier said: "This is probably not a space problem, but I would guess a path length problem. Long file names and multiple nested folders can lead to path names that exceed the OS character limits."

Hi Peter,

but is this a real issue on macOS ? How is the limit there?

Thought too long file paths are more a problem on Windows.

I just looked it up, and while the limit in OSX is large, 1024 characters, it's not infinite. But you're right, less likely to be a problem on Mac, so maybe Eugene is on the right path (no pun intended).

Well it says it can't make the package folder. That suggests to me that there isn't sufficient read/write permissions to make the package in the location you're trying to make it in - can you can confirm you can make a folder in that location with no issues?

Hm. Don't think, that "too little space on the disk" is the issue.

Did you try to package the InDesign document to the desktop?

That should work.

Have you checked to be sure all the links are accessible?

Which (exact) version of InDesign and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Has this issue just started in the sense that you've been able to package files previously but you're having issues with this particular document?

Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences?

Hi Derek,

The exact version is InDesign 17.4 and MacOS Big Sur 11.1. RAM = 16 GB, spare hard disk capacity = 53,26 GB

I have been able to package files before, but after the issue started, the problem appeared in every file that I tried to package, no exceptions.

Yes, I have tried resetting the InDesign preferences, but unfortunately, this did not solve the issue.

Have you checked the Package dialogue box to see if everything looks OK, such as ensuring you're using OTF fonts?

Two other thoughts:

You could save the document as an IDML to clear out the crud and renaming it and opening it again as an InDesign document.

Is it a very large document with lots of images? If so it might be worth releasing some spare hard disk capacity to help the processing.
