InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action

Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.

This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.

Preflight is disabled.

Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines

Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

How can you say you don't understand?
We pay for programs that must be tested as stable BEFORE being released. We don't care about constant little innovations; we want STABLE programs that work.
Try to speak like professionals, as you should be.
Please review this and other threads, as we've been working with a program that contains bugs.
We're not grumbling, we're angry.

Hi All,

Thank you for your patience. The team has released a Fix for this issue is now available in the latest InDesign Prerelease build - 21.2.0.27

Please try out this Prerelease build and let us know if it resolves the issue.

If you are not already part of InDesign's Prerelease program and would like to join and try out the latest Prerelease build, please do the following:

* Go to https://adobe.ly/4qUXgUv

* Sign in with your Adobe ID (the Email ID associated with your Adobe account)

* Select ‘Available Programs’

* Find ‘InDesign Prerelease’ and click ‘Join’

* Once you’ve joined, go to the Creative Cloud Desktop Application on your machine, click on 'Apps' in the section on the left

* Select the 'Pre-release' tab – there you will find the InDesign (Prerelease) build

* To check the Build number of the Prerelease build, hover the cursor over the name – you will see the Build number 'v_________'

* Select ‘Install’

Thanks,

Harshika

For the record only:
The following InDesign bugs, which have only appeared since December, are currently the most annoying:
1. History/Undo function. The problem with this is not only that only a few steps can be undone, but that it is NOT the last steps. Rather, it is a few steps from the last ten/twelve steps that Indesign apparently selects arbitrarily.
2. Hiding the text or a part of it in a text frame when editing the text within that text frame.
3. Cannot change tools via the tool palette.
4. Pages cannot be switched using the page palette.
5. Vertical shifting of the side view when copying elements.
Error 1 is a permanent error, errors 2 through 5 are sporadic errors.
However, I will NOT open a separate thread for each of these errors. It is enough if the Adobe Service Team becomes aware of it and finally fixes the bugs.

Hi @Outdesing,

Thanks for taking the time to clearly outline the different issues you're seeing. For the Undo history behavior you mentioned in point 1, the product team is already aware of this and is actively working on a fix. I'll make sure to share updates here as soon as I have more information.
Regarding point 2, where text or parts of text disappear while editing a text frame, we'll need an affected sample file to investigate further, as we haven't been able to reproduce this in-house yet. Ref: https://adobe.ly/49izI4y

For the remaining points you listed, I have't been able to reproduce the behavior described in points 3 through 5 on my end so far. To help us understand what's happening in your workflow, could you please share a short screen recording showing those issues when they occur?

Looking forward to your update, so we can take this further.

Abhishek

Since the problem is only for Windows users, I wonder if it has something to do with the Nvidia chip. I noticed the GPU option in edit/preferences has been grayed out for the previous two versions, which is when the problem started for most people, if I'm not mistaken. That said, I've tried running Indesign is using integrated graphics instead of the Nvidia GPU, and it has had zero effect. Whatever it is, we all must have something in common that's causing the glitch, because otherwise wouldn't it be effecting a far larger body of people? I'm annoyed that we can't just roll back to a verision that doesn't have these issues.

Would your theory apply even to those of us who don't have any Nvidia chip? I only have an AMD Ryzen with its embedded GPU.

Facing the same problem, and it's a huge issue. Kindly sort it out as soon as possible.

Confirmed on 27.2 Windows 11 after all standard troubleshooting steps have been followed (reset prefs, restart computer, etc.).

We're taking a poll of PC specs - particularly amount of RAM. Can you share yours?

Any updates on when the history glitch will be fixed? Hard to design when you can't undo history states.

Hi @defaultuynp32ifznnn,

Thanks for checking in. I understand how disruptive this undo behavior is while you're working. This issue is still actively being worked on by the product team, and there's no update to share just yet. I'll keep this thread posted as soon as I have any new information or progress to report.

Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

Bonjour,

I'm going to repeat what I said previously, because apparently new people aren't reading the previous posts (yeah, I get it - nine pages is a lot to read!):

Everyone writing posts just to grouse about this: Please go to the bug on UserVoice (https://adobe.ly/4jaiQSs), add a vote to the tally, and click the "Critical" button. That's the appropriate way to let Adobe know how many people are impacted by it and need it fixed. And once you've done that, UserVoice will notify you when there is a status change. I'm pretty sure the developers are already trying hard to figure out what's causing it (it's clearly a complex problem), but more votes can't hurt. Complaining here with no new info doesn't help anyone - it just fills all our email inboxes with notifications of more angry posts and wastes everyone's time reading them. (And don't just grouse in the UserVoice comment section either - if you don't have concrete info to add that might help the developers diagnose the problem, just wait.)

Oh, I missed that post (perhaps because it was in Portuguese) - I've removed that paragraph from my text above. Of course that wasn't my main point anyway - my main point was that whining and begging without adding any new info just slows down the process (by making us all, including any Adobe people reading the forum, read all that). I hope people joining the thread for the first time understand that.

Adobe doesn't fix bugs in time time measured in days... some of the threads on here are years old and reoccuring.

It's currently an ongoing issue on Windows:

There's no known solution at this point, as far as I know. Still, make sure to update to the latest version, InDesign 21.1, just in case.
