Indesign V 17.3 Running Slowly on new Macbook Pro 2021 M1 Max

Hey,

I recently got a new Macbook Pro and got the higher spec (M1 Max) in the hope that it would be super fast when working with larger files.

I am currently working on a project in InDesign which isn't a particuarly heavy file for the power of the laptop (file size is 25.8MB) and I'm finding that the app is frequently freezing and showing the spinning rainbow wheel when I do relatively simple tasks like relinking files, placing files into the document or even just opening and saving it. I've also noticed that it can be quite laggy in Illustrator too. Given that my Macbook is brand new and a more powerful machine, I'm pretty surprised that I am having speed issues like this when using Creative Cloud apps.

I've spoken with Apple Support already and they advised that I spoke to Adobe and seeing as I can't seem to open a help chat, I thought I'd ask in here instead! So if anyone has any advice or has had the same/similar issues, please let me know

Unfortunately, I have the same issues on my MacBook m1 max, it's really exhausting to work with adobe at this point since its slowing down my work process. Did you guys find a solution?

Same here. They rolled out an update that's supposed to fix it so it's more compatible with the silicone chip. My machine was maxing out on memory - like if I went into finder>macintosh>manage storage it would tell me I had 300gb of 'system data' which was purely from indesign and illustrator just being open!!! As soon as I closed it it went right back down to like 20gb.  it kept crashing my mac becuase it ran out of memory which is just ridiculous. I updated last week and turned off GPU in both programmes in hopes it would improve the situation and if anything it's made things worse. I'm not maxing out of memory any more at least but now i can't even link a file without the beachball of doom and freezing and having to force quit. it's an absolute joke considering the M1 has been out for a while now and we pay through the nose for this software - Basic jobs are taking me 3x as long now! These machines are more than capable of handling these processes! I'm absolutely fed up with using adobe but when it's for some unfathomable reason STILL the industry standard we have no choice but to put up with it.

Hi @tashp27135623 ,

We're so sorry to hear about the trouble. That's not an expected behavior, so would you mind sharing a few more details like:

  1. The exact version of InDesign & macOS.
  2. Is this happening with a specific file or multiple files?
  3. Where are the files saved? Are they available locally on your computer or on any network folder/drive synched locally?
  4. Does any specific action lead to slow performance, or it happens randomly?
  5. Have you tried the steps shared here

We're here to help, just need more information.

Thanks

Rishabh

Hey Rishabh,

Thanks for reaching out! I've tried some of the steps listed in the article and don't seem to be getting anywhere with it. I am also finding that Illustrator is running quite slowly as well. The issue with speed seems to solely be with Creative Cloud apps and none of the other apps on my laptop. Is there some way a troubleshoot could be done or I could speak to someone about this further?

I'm confused as to why this is happening as my laptop is only 5 days old and has the M1 Max chip so should be able to handle these files (which aren't overly large files) without any issues
