Question

InDesign v20.1 crashes during standard operations

Dear Community,

since the recent update to v20.1, InDesign has been crashing without warning during standard operations. This happens, for example, when moving or copying objects to a different spread, when assigning objects to a different layer, or sometimes even when moving objects that affect text flow within their spread.

I hope the next update will fix these issues.

Question: Can I revert to the previous version of InDesign? Or will I then be unable to open current documents?

Best regards to everyone!

In answer to your question about rolling back, yes, you can go back to version 19 and you can have multiple versions installed. Most experienced users here turn off the option to remove old versions when installing a new one.

@checkar.de

If you are working on Windows 11 - there are a lot of reports about botched updates - please check other threads.

If it's just one document - then it might be "just" corrupted - try IDMLing - export s IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original INDD file.

Thanks! 😊

The operating system is macOS, and the error occurs with different documents.

Best regards,

Hi https://adobe.ly/3ECb7Mv

Would you mind sharing your operating system details? Also, have you submitted the crash report via the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog box? If so, please share the email address (used while submitting) over the DM on the Community, so I can check the logs. Reference: https://adobe.ly/3QnUZkr

Could you confirm if this happening with a specific document or with all the documents?

Moreover, please try the troubleshooting mentioned here in these articles (let me know the output): https://adobe.ly/3QleHgP and https://adobe.ly/41jjHc4

Regarding your question, you can revert to the previous version of InDesign via the Creative Cloud app. However, files created in the latest version may not open directly in an older version (InDesign 2024). You can try saving them as IDML files to ensure compatibility.

Will wait to hear back from you.

Hi Abhishek,

InDesign is running on macOS 13.4.1 here, and the layout data is stored on the internal hard drive of a Mac mini (2023/M2). The described crashes occur with different documents that have no shared content. Recovery attempts fail.

Unfortunately, the Adobe Crash Reporter does not appear automatically. I have provoked the crash and manually started the Adobe Crash Reporter. I will share the email address via DM.

Unfortunately, the two interesting articles don't fit the problem: The error occurs in the same way with different documents, and InDesign doesn't crash when starting up.

Thank you very much for your support!
