InDesign - very slow file saving, doesn't user computer resources

I am creating a magazine in Adobe InDesign. The magazine has around 80 pages.

Saving it takes 3-4 minutes (into a preview file that is 184 MB). InDesign uses only 2 GB RAM while saving. Why?

I have 32 GB RAM, Intel CORE i7, SSD Disk. My laptop is in good shape. I scanned it in case there were any problems with the hardware. And there are none.

I had the same problem while working in Adobe Illustrator. It takes a lot of time with bigger files. Why?

I read a lot of recommendations on the internet to use 16 or 32 GB RAM when working with InDesign. And what for when it doesn't use even 1/10 of it.

Are the images linked or embeded. Faster to have them linked.

Could you clarify what into a preview file that is 184 MB means? Are you saving or exporting? Are all the placed files linked and not embedded?

What version of InDesign and what operating system are you using?

See if resetiing the InDesign preferences helps:

1) Close InDesign
2) Double click on Adobe InDesign's icon to launch it
3) QUICKLY hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift. (for Windows) or CTL+OPT+CMD+Shift (for Mac OS X)
4) When a dialog appears, ask you “Delete InDesign Preference Files?” Click Yes.

(If you don't see the question do it again.)
