Indesign vs Pro

There's no question that InDesign is the current functional/market leader for publication design and layout. It does have a steep learning curve — frankly, it seems like you can't do anything/right until you've worked through several basic tutorials — but its only real competition is the very elderly QuarkXpress and the low-cost Affinity Publisher. The latter is quite capable, more or less a clone of InDesign's basic look, feel and approach, but it is a $100 program, so you get what you pay for.

InDesign can be used as an all-in authoring and publication tool (I've written several books in it, from first blank page), but depending on the nature and length and complexity of your book, you may be better off staying in Word or equivalent until it's at the point where you'd send it off to a publisher without a single regret. That is, editing, preparing and pre-formatting your text can be a lot easier in Word than in InDesign, especially as a newomer.

Then when the ms is complete, import it to ID and prepare it for publication. You don't specify your publication plans but you do include EPUB, so I ass/u/me you're looking at print and e-book through one or more of the publishing provider/services. ID can handle both with ease, but again, your first few weeks with it should be spent thoroughly learning its model, features and use without expecting to accompliish much towards finished projects or publication.

If you mean Acrobat Pro, it is not an editing and layout program. It has some editing capabilities but is horrible at them. For laying out a book and Adobe, it would be InDesign.

I don't know what you mean by Pro Adobe, but InDesign is the right program and the market leader for editorial. It's very easy to acquire the basic concepts, then the sky's the limit... but it requires a little more time and resilience.
