Indesign will not let me import JPEG TIFF or photoshop files

How can I fix this problem? When I try to open any psd tiff or jpeg file a notice comes up saying I may need a plug in, the path isn't supported or the image I'm trying to import may be open in another window.

Not mentioned so far (although it should have been first): the online Help.

    1. Use place instead of open.
    2. Don't use / or \ in the file's or path's name.

As Bob says, use File > Place and NOT File > Open.
