Indesign won't open and I'm getting fed up!

Hi,

I'm in desperate need of help. I have been working on a photo book for a year and it’s finally finished. I was in the process of exporting it to PDF and then indesign quit. I tried to reopen it but then it simply wont open. Indesign itself will open and shows the top bar (file, edit, etc) shows up but no files will open, the usual grey background doesn’t show up, and it won’t open a new document (I can open the screen to open a new document but when I click ‘create’ nothing happens).

This started on August 6 and after several hours of troubleshooting I fixed the issue by uninstalling Indesign and installing an older version. However, this happened again today (August 8), and I can’t seem to fix it. I was on screen with Adobe support for hours, and they were unable to help. We’ve uninstalled and reinstalled several versions, they got rid of the preference, cleared the cashe, and did many other things but it just won’t open or start a new document.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Macbook Mojave 10.14.6

Indesign 16.1.4 and also 16.4.2

Did Adobe support make sure you don’t have any third party extensions running, e.g. font management or other utilities?

Also did they try a safe mode startup to see if it could be some other app interfering. In the past there have been reports of browser plugins interfering with Adobe apps.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Have you tried the suggestions shared in this article https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/crash-on-launch.html? If yes, please share the version of InDesign, we'll try our best to assist you with this.

@Barb Binder has pointed you to a great resource

Here's some quick tips

Try resetting your preferences:
The easiest way to reset everything is to delete the InDesign preferences: as soon as InDesign starts to boot hold down Shift, Alt, Ctrl (and Apple/Cmd if working on a Macintosh). A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.
Further info and instructions here if needed:

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
