Index Entry Using "For Next # of Paragraphs" Does Not Include Pages Spanned by the Final Paragraph

I’m using the “For Next Number of Paragraphs” type for an index entry and setting it to 2. The second paragraph extends onto the following page, but the index is only showing the first page.

It’s an old bug, reported several times, but it was never fixed. There’s an alternative that’s more useful, see https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/index-page-ranges.html.

Thank you for this. I have not used scripts in InDesign and do not anticipate using them for this project (I am not a programmer; my deadline is the end of the month). My idea for an inelegant work-around is to tell InDesign that there are 3 paragraphs when there actually only 2 in order to force it to include the next page. Fortunately, this being a book being prepared for publication, there should be no changes to the text that would move things between pages. And there are no paragraphs that span more than a page. Do you anticipate any problem with that approach?

You just shift the problem: instead of several/many ranges being a page short, you get ranges that are a page long.

    Hi @Author57,

Thank you for reporting this. I can understand how confusing it is when the generated index doesn't include the complete page range for the referenced content.

Based on @Peter Kahrel's feedback, I tested this workflow on my end and was able to observe the same behavior. Peter, if you're aware of an existing UserVoice report for this issue, could you please share the link here? That would help us review any previous discussions and add further visibility to the report.

In the meantime, I have reached out to the product team to confirm whether this is a known limitation or a bug that should be formally tracked. I'll share an update here as soon as I hear back from them.

Thank you both for bringing this to our attention and helping us investigate it further.

    Best,
    Abhishek

    Hi @Abhishek Rao -- Here’s a link to a UserVoice report:

    https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/49210655-index-type-range-bugs

This one is from 2024, but there have been others, much older, which are either in one of the 74 pages with index bugs, or just got lost.

I’m creating an index for a book. When I index a section, I select Type / To Next Use of Style and enter the appropriate style name. For one style, this is working as expected. However, for my header styles, it just indexes the first page, not the whole range.

The index marker should be not in the header, but in the paragraph following it. If it’s in the header, it just points to itself.
