Index generating longer than original

Hi All,

First time posting, but having an issue that I've tried to look up how to fix and don't see any fixes on.

Working on a book that we received back from translators.  I just generated the index  to make sure it's all well and everything is coming back translated (side note: i did not create the index to begin with) when I noticed that I keep having to expand the original text/index box becuase there is A LOT more entries then the original.  From what I noticed it does look like there is multiples happening and It's gone from just 3 pages of index to now never ending pages.

How can i go about fixing this?  I can't just go through and Delete multiples because in the case of the company the same thing can be under different headings, so that would mean hours of work looking at the english and translated index to compare/cross of my list of what i checked, etc.

I havn't touched anything in the index panel. Any ideas of why this might of happened and how I can fix it in a timely manner?

Thanks!

Hi @Veronica32962862kep1:

I think you have two different questions here. One is why the index is so different and two is why InDesign can't finish placing the whole index.

Have you spoken to the translators? I think I would start there. It looks as if they re-indexed the content and added subtopics. For example, Autres Réglages is a level 1 entry on both. The example on the left has a long list of subtopics and the one on the right doesn't have any. A good indexer reads the content, and determines what needs to go in the index and then adds the markers. There's no way we can know which one is right—someone working with you will need to make that determination.

The never-ending text flow is an InDesign issue. That kind of thing can happen if the keep settings or instructing InDesign to keep all the paragraphs together. If it isn't obvious, the quickest fix is probably to let one of us look at the index to figure out what is going on there. (I'm happy to look at it). I would start by looking at story editor to locate the end of the content. And then I would try to figure out why InDesign can't finish placing it.

Hi Barb,
I've just e-mailed the translator to see if they had done anything to the index like you mentioned.  So, I will start there and in the mean time I will look at the story editor to see what I can gather.  I can let you know if I get stumped 🙂

Thanks for the help!

What exactly do you mean by original text box and index box? Is the text overset before you generate index? After generating the index you'd expect that you need to flow it, adding pages until it no longer oversets. Do you mean that it never stops being overset?

What do you mean by 'multiples'? Text being repeated?

Maybe post your document so that someone can take  a look. Or show some screenshots.

Hi Peter,
When I generate the index it replaces the original index with a much larger index.  As in, there are so many entries it seems to never stop being overset like you mentioned.  The original document only has 3 pages of index.

When i say multiples i mean that i can see some of the index entries have doubled or tripled.
