Index not alphabetical

When entering proper names from the text to an ID Index, they enter usually as the 'John Smith' format.

After changing all manually to 'Smith, John' style needed, can the Index then be re-alphabetised?

Thanks - no change. That is, after changing the original 'John Smith' by hand to Smith, John, it remains unchanged after saving, restarting and adding new items to the Index and hitting the 'generate' button.
