Index of products

I create a catalog of products with photos and descriptions of these products.

At the beginning of the document I want to place the index of products in few categories with mini pictures - index with the page numbers on which the product is located. In addition, I create the link - after pressing the button is to transfer to the page with the right product.

I often have to change the order of pages (add new products and delete older ones) and I would like the page numbers to change automatically in the index and also maintain the link from index to the right page.

Is it possible?

Can you help me how to set it and do it?

And just a clarification on terms, Matezee: an index is an alphabetical list and usually appears at the end of a document. A table of contents is a chronological list that appears at the beginning of a document. How you set them up is very different but both will display current page numbers, will update the numbers after edits and you can hyperlink from them to the source in a PDF.

Before you get going—do you need an alphabetical list or a chronological list? I ask because there's a lot less work setting up a table of contents than an index. You can add either one to the front or back of the document—the position isn't important.

Note: there's also an option to sort a table of contents alphabetically—but that likely won't work if you have sections for the products,

Apparently, I did not express myself well in English. It definitely does not help me express what I mean.

You're right, it's about the table of contents in the form of miniature photos of products along with the page number on which it is located in the catalog.

I would like to combine a thumbnail image in a table of contents with a product photo, in such a way that if it changes the layout of pages, the hyperlinks will still be combined with the right photo (not a specific page in the catalog).

I can make a miniature of the object and make hyperlinks to a specific page, but if I change the layout of the pages, everything is falling apart. Of course, I also change the page numbers manually in the table of contents - it would be nice if these numbers also change automatically.

Can indesign assign a page number where a particular photo is located.

    Yes.

To do a table of contents with images you would use a distinct paragraph style, format the first insertion point of an empty text frame with that and insert an image as anchored frame to that insertion point.

When you build your table of contents the image will show up as expected if you add the paragraph style.

You could even hide the images from the page if you move the part of the text frames that is holding the image to the pasteboard.
