Ink overprint

Hi everyone,

I've just had my document professionally printed (first draft tester) and in some areas the ink has overprinted, so for example I have a black box overlapping a larger green box but I can kind of see the green box underneath?

If I go on View> Overprint preview a box pops up saying 'The transparancy blending space is set to RGB. Overprint preview will only preview overprinting that involves spot colours.' It also doesn't show the issue with this preview.

I'm not sure why RGB is involved here since it's always been headed for the printers. So I think I've cocked up somewhere. Thanks

Check your Edit>Transparency Blend Space, it‘s set to Document RGB

but I can kind of see the green box underneath

When the document’s Intent is set to Print, Preferences>Appearance of Black has an option to globally set the Overprint of the default [Black] Swatch to on or off. The options for knocking out are:

• uncheck Overprinting of the [Black] swatch (a potential registration/trapping problen with small black text on colored backgrounds)

• make a new black only swatch, and when you use it, uncheck Overprint Fill in the Attributes panel

• make a black swatch with some CMY added—Rich Black here:

That is so so so helpful - thank you so much. I've just followed your diagram and changed one black element to Rich black (to compare) and also altered the appearance and I can now see where I have the overprint problems. Amazing.

100% black always overprints by default. For a box that you describe, you should create a rich black. Consult with the printer on the proper CMYK mix.

I completely overlooked the rich black thing. This has sorted it! Thank you!
