Question

Interactive button exported to a pdf file and uploaded on Wordpress, not working on mobile

Hi,

My team and I create our product catalogue on Indesign and we export it as pdf (interactive) as we recently added a button that directs it to another pdf file. We then upload the exported pdf files to our Wordpress site. Now, the button works perfectly fine when the pdf is viewed on a laptop and/or a desktop. We have tried using our phones to view the catalogue and none of us can click on the button in there. We are using iPhones and for viewing the pdf files aka our catalogue on our website, we use Safari. Is there any way we can fix this issue aka have the interactive button work on mobile devices?

Thanks in advance.

In fact it is the opposite: not all software are compatible with the PDF format (aka ISO 32000 standard), far from it.

So there is nothing we can do to make a PDF compatible with all devices and all software, except to remove all Comments and interactivity, and leave only the background layout.

Simple hyperlinks still work.

Be sure to use Acrobat on iPhones, not the low-end PDF viewer provided by default by Apple.

The trouble is you can't control the PDF reader the end-user will use, so you have to make your Interactive PDF compatible with all devices and readers if it's to be distributed widely. Hence no multi-state buttons etc.

Just create a button shape with the word(s) you want on on it, save it as a PNG, place that in your InDesign document and hyperlink it to another part of the document, this will work on any device as an Interactive PDF. Multi-state buttons don't.

Beyond Acrobat or Reader on a desktop, interactive PDF is nothing but a crapshoot. That includes browsers and mobile devices.

Trying to view one on a mobile browser is not going to work. Sorry, but you'll need to create a real web page for this.
