Interactive PDF - setting up book for both print and web

Hello!

We are looking for a way to set up our documents so that they can easily be made print ready and exported as an interactive document. Our documents are generally 30-100 pages and have some interactive elements such as buttons and overhanging tabs that people can click on to jump to a different section.

One idea we had was to format our print version and link that indesign file in a separate interactive file where we have set up the overhanging tabs. This created a huge and unwieldy file that was almost impossible to work with.

Another idea was to format the interactive elements in the print file on a separate layer that we could hide when it was time to print, but we were not sure how we could have interactive tabs since those would need different sized pages to overhang.

Any ideas?

It sounds like all of your navigation can be set up in the InDesign file as hyperlinks and then exported as a Print pdf (rather than using buttons and an "official/actual" Interactive pdf which can be read by far fewer pdf viewers). The only workaround that I can think of to avoid needing different page sizes for the interactive elements would be to include the tabs and their hyperlinks within a slug area above the pages. When you output for print you would do so without the slug area and when outputting to pdf you would include the slug area (but no crop marks).

i think option 1 is the correct one. that is what we do. We make interactive magazine and do lots of interactive elements to show and hide content via IN5. however, sometimes they ask for a print version. And we have to make an alternate layout.
