Question

intercative pdf not working in Edge browser

I have developed an interactive PDF in Adobe InDesign and exported it using Adobe PDF (Interactive). The PDF contains multiple buttons that use Show/Hide Buttons and Forms, layer visibility control, page navigation, and objects set as "Hidden Until Triggered".

The PDF works as expected when opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader, where all interactive buttons correctly show and hide layers and perform the assigned actions.

However, when the same PDF is opened in Microsoft Edge, the interactive functionality does not work correctly. Some buttons are visible but do not respond, and the show/hide actions are not executed.

My questions are:

  1. Does Microsoft Edge fully support InDesign interactive PDF features such as Show/Hide Buttons and Forms and Hidden Until Triggered objects?
  2. Are there specific export settings in InDesign that improve compatibility with Edge?
  3. Is this a limitation of Edge's built-in PDF viewer, or could there be an issue with the PDF export itself?
  4. Has anyone successfully deployed an InDesign interactive PDF with advanced button actions that works directly within Edge?

    Answers:

    1. No
    2. No
    3. Limitation of Edge’s built-in PDF viewer
    4. No

Suggested workaround: If show/hide functionality is essential to presentation, use Publish Online. If PDF distribution is essential, then design without advanced interactive features.

Interactive PDFs have only ever been guaranteed to work with Acrobat version 9.0 and above. For web design you should really be exporting as HTML. You can check out various free videos about the best way to do this on You Tube.

The answer is not what you’d like to hear: You simply should stop using buttons in PDF because there’s no guarantee they’ll work in countless 3rd-party PDF viewers, including Edge. There’s no guarantee they’ll work in Acrobat either, for that matter. Same applies to other interactive elements in PDF such as videos etc. Use hyperlinks instead of buttons.
