Is there a way to automatically generate a table of contents in InDesign?

I’m currently working on a multi-page document in Adobe InDesign and was wondering if there’s an efficient way to automatically generate a table of contents. My document uses multiple headings and paragraph styles, and I’d like the table of contents to update automatically if page numbers or text change. I’m especially interested in best practices for setting it up correctly from the start and avoiding common issues like incorrect page references or missing headings. Any step-by-step guidance or tips from experienced users would be really helpful.

Hi Thomsonwilliam6,

Thank you for reaching out. As rightly mentioned by our expert, I found this video on YouTube that might help. Please check here and see if that helps.

I am also keeping the discussion open for our experts for more suggestions.

Thanks,

Harshika

This is an important and basic feature of InDesign and can't be summarised quickly. InDesign's Help gets you on your way, and there are several good online and print introductions to InDesign.
