Is there a way to make “long text variables” wrap automatically?
Sometimes I encounter very long chapter titles, and when using variable headers, they don't wrap automatically. Is there a good solution for this?

Currently, all the text is crammed into a single line.

No, there isn't. It's a long-standing feature request. Go to https://indesign.uservoice.com and add your voice.

Hi @dublove:

Peter is correct of course, and I marked it for you. But here's my work-around. Keep in mind I know you are trying to automate everything you can so not looking for work-arounds but maybe it will benefit someone else.

InDesign can collect both paragraph styles (always whole paragraphs) and character styles (assigned to a string of words) into the Running Header variable. Since my clients don't want two line headers anyway, I assign a character style that doesn't do anything other than let me pull specific words into the head.
