Issue Report: InDesign 2023 Crash on Opening IDML File with Custom Bullet Character

Problem Summary: InDesign 2023 crashes without an error message when attempting to open an IDML file that contains a text frame with a custom bullet character from the "Minion Variable Concept" font.

 

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open Adobe InDesign 2023.
  2. Create a new document.
  3. Add a text frame to the document.
  4. Activate the Bullets and Numbering feature by clicking the "Bullets and Points" icon in the control panel.
  5. Hold the Alt key and click the "Bullets and Points" icon again to open the "Bullets and Numbering" dialogue.
  6. In the "Bullets and Numbering" dialogue, click "Add" to add a new bullet character.
  7. Choose the "Minion Variable Concept" font.
  8. Select the character with GID 104 / Unicode 2022 as the bullet.
  9. Apply the bullet and close the dialogue.
  10. Save the document as an IDML file.
  11. Attempt to open the saved IDML file in InDesign 2023.

Expected Result: The IDML file should open normally without causing any issues.

Actual Result: InDesign crashes immediately upon opening the IDML file, and no error message is displayed.

System Details:

  • Adobe InDesign Version: 2023
  • Operating System: [Windows 10]
  • Font Used: Minion Variable Concept
  • Character GID: 104 / Unicode: 2022

Additional Information:

  • This issue appears to be specific to the use of the "Minion Variable Concept" font and the specified bullet character.

Do you experience the same problem in InDesign 2024 (19.4)? You can install it in addition to 2023 (uncheck the option to remove the old versions before the installation).
