Issue with Constrain Proportions in InDesign 2025 (20.0)

Constrain proportions for width and height in InDesign 2025 (20.0) is broken. In previous versions of InDesign the constrain-status would stay the way you selected always, now you have to link it every time you scale something, it's quite annoying and adds an extra step to workflow.

Hi everyone / G_Man,

I’m happy to share that the issue with Constrain Proportions has been fixed! The fix has been implemented in InDesign 20.1.0.36, and the team has retested it on both Windows and Mac to ensure it’s working as expected.

Please update your InDesign to the next coming version once made available publicly (20.1) via the Creative Cloud app to apply the fix.

Thank you all for your patience and feedback throughout this process. If you encounter any further issues or have questions, feel free to reach out-I’m here to help!

Best,
Abhishek Rao

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you - this seems to have finally got fixed itself with an update a few months ago now.

I think this issue has returned in the new 2026 version. I’m on the latest version and this bug is still happening - can this PLEASE be fixed again in an upcoming update?? The extra workflow step is so annoying

I can’t reproduce it here in InDesign 21.2 on macOS Tahoe.

Try to clear caches as described here - sometimes it fixes unusual UI issues:

Is any one else still experincing this problem? It scales up fine but not down. I have updated to 20.1.

Hi - no I've not had any issues since updating, except that Indesign is laggy as hell now.

I hate asking stupid questions - so here goes - have you definitley uninstalled previous versions?

I haven't done any yet. I'm not sure what to do first. Do I do the uninstall pervious version first or do I unintall and reinstall creative cloud? I'd like to keep some of the previous version for my job.

Did you upgrade to 20.1? Mine is working correctly.

Hi @aaikele,

Thank you for following up! The update to InDesign 20.1, which includes the fix for the Constrain Proportions issue, is expected to be available in mid-January 2025. Please keep an eye on your Creative Cloud app for the update.

Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions!

We will have waited 3 months to get this simple fix.

This is what I call a real good-for-value-for-money from Adobe. Not.

Exactly. Adobe has broken a feature that worked perfectly logically for years. Maybe if I delete v.2025 and go back to an earlier version?

Yes, 2024 is still quite stable.

I am here for this. I guess it is NOT fixed yet.

Correct. Yup, sadly this has been neglected. This is highly unprofessional. Having to convert all 2025 ID files back to 2024 files is a real chore.

Hi @G_Man ,

see my workaround using the percentage input fields with values plus measurement unit.

HI all,

I can see the issue as well.

As a workaround you could use the Percentage field for the same purpose.

Instead of percentage values you can also input numbers together with measurement units like e.g. 50 mm.

InDesign will scale the object accordingly with contrained proportions if the lock is set.

Just tested that workaround with my German InDesign 2025 version 20.0.0.

Yes, can confirm the same issue in InDesign 2025.
