Issue with Variable Font Installation and InDesign Compatibility

We’ve encountered a technical issue involving InDesign 20.3.1  and the macOS Sequoia 15.4.1 Font Book, and we would appreciate your help in identifying the source of the problem.

The issue is as follows:

  • When we install our variable fonts using Font Book (macOS), they do not appear in Adobe InDesign.

  • However, if we manually place the same font files directly into InDesign’s Fonts folder, the fonts load correctly and are fully functional.

From our side, we are trying to determine whether this issue stems from a compatibility problem between Adobe InDesign and macOS, or if it’s a known limitation or bug affecting how variable fonts are recognized across these systems.

This is becoming increasingly important, as some of our clients may encounter similar issues, and we’d like to be prepared with a clear explanation—or solution—to share with them.

Could you please advise us on whether this is a known issue? And if so, whether there are any planned updates or workarounds you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your time and support.
We look forward to your guidance.

Kindest regards,
Daniela

Are you adding to Font Book under Computer or by User?

Are you adding to Font Book while ID is running? i.e. do they show if you close ID and reopen?

Do these same fonts show up in other apps?

I don't have a Sequoia install handy to test, but I can add a variable font to Font Book with 20.3.1 in Ventura and Sonoma with no issues, so it might be an OS issue; I did find other posts regarding issues with Font Book and Sequoia.

Hello @Brad @ Roaring Mouse

Thanks so much for the advice and information you provided.

I will run a few more tests and see what happens.

Hi Daniela,

What happens when you...?

  • Select a font in FontBook, then choose File > Validate Selection

What if you downgrade back to the previous version you've been using?

Yes, this could be an option. But I'm more interested in figuring out where the bug is coming from and if there are any plans to fix this issue. 😃

You can check and report here:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs

But it's never a good idea to "instantly" update to the latest version - especially on the production machines.

It's best to wait 6+ months...

Or even stay with a previous major version 😉
