Try resetting your InDesign preferences:

Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

If it’s just the one file, I’d export it to IDML and then work with that.

HI Bob, thank you. I tried that and the translation wasn’t smooth (i.e., photo missing, text lines funky, etc).

Which OS?

What happens, what's not "properly"?

Mac OS 10.12.6

Oh, I see the post itself didn’t show all my intended remarks! After I make revisions and save, when I export to PDF (I’ve tried both high quality print and press quality), and REPLACE the preexisting file of same name, the new pdf doesn’t reflect the new revisions. There’s something wrong with the save feature, I think: simple save (command + S) is greyed out on the panel choices, and I’ve been using “Save As.” That workaround worked for me yesterday, but not today. Already tried quitting and reopening InDesign.

By the way, once you've Saved a document, Save will be greyed out and only Save As will appear in the menu.
