Leading Question for Poetry

I am trying to change the leading of my document, but I can't figure out how to make it apply to spacing within paragraphs and not just the space between paragraphs. The document I'm working with is poetry, so for the most part this isn't a problem but every once in a while there is one word that won't fit on a line and then is very tight to the previous line.

Thank you for the replies. I originally highlighted the whole document and made it the 10/8 leading. And now I’ve made sure to check a line that I like and the errant paragraph to see that both are the 10/8 leading. When I increase the leading in the character panel for just the errant paragraph, it increases the spaces between lines in the same paragraph and also the spaces between paragraphs. Is there a way to just change the spacing between lines in the same paragraph?

Here is a photo with the invisible characters.

Oh. You’re using returns after every line.

That’s not the best way to do it, but we’ll work with what you got.

    1. Place your cursor before the capital H in “Hope.”
    2. Hit the Return key. That will stop the text wrap that’s causing your crazy type settings to, well, go crazy.

You will need to hit the Return key for every line before it gets to the end of the text frame that contains your poem. If you don’t, the same problem will happen again. But now you know how to fix it.

If you’d like to learn more about working with text in Adobe InDesign, and I think it might make your life easier if you’re going to do more of this, I’d recommend you check out this link. It refers you to a Virginia Commonwealth University tutorial for formatting text with InDesign. It’s very short, covers all the basics and is free.

Good luck with your poetry project,

    1. Click in one of the paragraphs with the space between lines that you like. Make note of the type size and leading you like. I’m willing to bet that it’s not setting type at 10/8 leading.
    2. Quadruple-click — one-two-three-four — to highlight the entire errant paragraph. Change the type specs from 10/8 leading to the line spacing you prefer.

This should be the end of your problem. I don’t know this because I’m Rhodes Scholar bright, but because I’ve made the same mistake before.

    Hope this helps,

    Randy

    Exactly what did you change?

Between the paragraphs is in the paragraphs panel.

Between the lines is in the Character panel.

Can you also turn on the invisible characters? Between the lines there shouldn't be carriage returns
