Question

Left Indent stop behaving as Tab stop

ID 2023 on Mac

Tabs were working correctly before I added outdents. Unfortunately, the Left Indent seems to be acting as a tab stop. I wasn't expecting this, but maybe is intended outcome? (Has never come up before.) Text needs to be at second tab stop on ruler.

There are several hundred pages of these texts, so am GREPing and find/replacing as much as possible, but would rather not add a bunch of unnecessary tab stops if possible.

Also curious about the blue box at Left Indent stop on the tab ruler. Looking at other docs, it is there, too. Is not related to text selection and does not appear in paragraph style settings.

Any info on either of these appreciated. Thanks

Hi @~BarbaraT:

You have defined a hanging indent, with the first line at 0p0 from the margin, and the left indent at 1p6 (it's blue because it is selected). Drag the extra tab between the two down over the ruler to remove it. Then Shift+drag the left indent to the desired location.

I'm not sure you need any tab stops or characters, but it's really not clear what the desired final outcome is. Perhaps another screen shot once you get this cleaned up, or a sketch would help us understand.

Hi -- Desired outcome = tabbing twice would move the text to the second tab stop. Instead, it takes 3 tabs to move the text to the 2nd tab stop. (Maybe this is expected outcome from ID?) Including a better screen shot this time (:

The tab in between the two stops is needed to create a space between a superscript number and start of text. The space needs to be same for all superscript numbers and is also used to align other lines of text (on their own style w/outdents), as the translated text is quite a bit longer than the Chinese.

PS: Thought the blue stop might be a selection, too, but it didn't seem to be related yesterday. Today the blue stop is gone. Tried selecting various parts of the text and it din't show up. In any case, it still acts as a tab stop.

Thanks for your help!

How many Paragraph Styles do you use for this part of the text ?

From your screenshot - you should use at least three - unless first two lines are the same paragraph?
