Limited Undo Steps in InDesign Despite High RAM on Surface Pro 9 (32GB)

I have 32GB of RAM. Is that not enough for InDesign anymore?  When working on a project that's not even all that big (5-20 mb), I'm occasionally limited to 2 or 3 undos at most. Not even after anything complicated -- it happens after simple actions like moving objects around, text editing, etc. Quitting / reopening InDesign only fixes this problem for a short time.

What else can I try to fix this?

Notes:

  • I've already tried resetting all prefrences, and completely uninstillaning / reinstalling indesign several times
  • SPECS: 32GB RAM / Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1255U 2.60 GHz  / System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • local disc only about half full
  • This has been a problem with Indesign 2024 and the newest 2025 version.
  • I'm not running anything else intense while using Indesign. Sometimes photoshop, which wasn't a problem in the past.
  • I'm running Windows 11 on a Surface Pro 9 (I've been a user of various Surface computers since 2012 and never had problems until last year).

I already reset preferences. I've also uninstalled/reinstalled. It's a problem that has been happening with different files for about a year or so. But I'll try some of the smaller tips in this article. thanks.

Hello @yelm,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind keeping a check on the available storage space on the hard drive when you start encountering this problem in InDesign to see if there is a problem there?

Also, try running InDesign under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and sharing your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
