Long accordion leaflet fold marks compensation for offset printers

Dear all

i'm preparing a double sided 9 panel accordion vertical leaflet (10x10cm) for 100 to 135 grm paper. The last one i did was in the 90s and honestly i can't remember how much i compensated to properly fold and if nowdays the printers will do the compensation automatically maintaining order in the layout. I remember calculating width values according to the folding lines and adding them to the final measurements and then creating double guides of 0.5 or 0.8mm where the folding should occur. I would like to know what would be a good solution today for fold marks and compensations to avoid technical faults in printing. Thank you very much

An accordion fold would have equal sized panels. Print file would be 2 sides: 10cm wide x 90cm height, with fold marks at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 cm.

That's assuming it's a straight zig-zag fold, there are alternatives – be warned!

It is a zigzag all the way. Thanks Derek

That is going to depend on different factors including the thickness of the paper. Best advice is to call the printer.

He can't do that apparently, read the earlier posts.

Yup. Just got to that. I use email for the forums so sometimes I miss a response.

What about mocking one up using the paper you want and then discussing it with your printer. You can agree on measurements which you can then transfer to your new InDesign document.

Thanks Derek, that would be ideal but i won't be in contact with the printers. The client will receive a pdf and will follow up on the printing. I think there is a simple standard increase to add up according to paper weight and panels quantity

I understand, but it puts you in a vulnerable position should something go wrong. I suggest you produce your mock-up and give it to your customer for them to check with their printer, so you can proceed with confidence. Alternatively, ask your customer to get their printer to supply you with a mockup or template.

Another possibility would be to provide the leaflet as individual page PDFs for the printer to impose and adjust.
