Long delays moving/copying InDesign files

Hi. Is anyone experiencing long delays when either moving or copying InDesign files on the Mac desktop? I'm running Ventura now but was seeing the same behaviour with Monterey which is a shame as I was hoping the OS upgrade might fix things. I'm running the latest InDesign v.18.0.

It's kind of weird as it's not every ID file, it's quite random and happens with files I've opened directly from their folders, and with files that have been sent to me by an editor which I haven't yet worked on.

I've tried all of the usual procedures for fixing finder issues - delete p.list, start up in safe mode and so on - but nothing makes this go away. A restart will sometimes improve things briefly but the issue always returns after a few files have been moved between directories.

Any ideas out there? I can't find any references to this issue elsewhere.

I've the same (or similar) issue, but with ID CS6 files. It started to happen since Monterey, and is happening more often in Sequoia.

Moving ID files on a different folder, either on another tree of inside the current folder, may take a very long time (up to a few minutes for a few files a few MB large).

In the past I had several issues copying ID files from my Mac, to an external FAT32 drive, to a PC. On a PC (Windows 10), the ID files were reported as damaged, so much that the backup program refused to copy them. All the other files from the same drive were fine.

I don't have the same issue with other types of files.

These files have been all edited via local network. I may have the files in a Mac, and InDesign on another Mac, connected via the local netwok. Maybe this leaves some sort of flag in the files?

Hello @Paolo T,

I'm sorry to hear you're having similar problems accessing files in InDesign. Could you confirm the version of the OS/InDesign installed, and if the files you are having trouble with are being accessed only via the network when this happens? If yes, please try copying the file from the network location to a local directory first, and then open it in InDesign to see if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your answer. I have however probably not given all the needed information.

- This is happening on macOS Sequoia 15.5. It did happen with Monterey 12.x.

- InDesign is the old trusty CS6.

- The long delay while copying is happening on a local drive. I noticed it, today, when the connected Mac from which I run InDesign CS6 was disconnected.

So, my guess is that it is not a matter of working via network per se, but something in some way connected to the fact that these files where edited via network. Working via network has been reliable for a few years, now, but the network is just a home-business one.

Just guessing.

Hi Tony, did you ever figure out the issue to this? My machine has exibited this behavior for the past 1-2 years (currently running Monterey on a MacbookPro 2019). My inkling is that it has something to do with the image preview file that's being baked into the file, because some of my documents have this, and some don't... such a bizarre thing.

Hi @guilin2001,

Thanks for reaching out! Could you let me know where the file is stored-locally, on a remote machine, cloud, or external drive? If it's not local, try moving it to a local directory and check if the delay persists.
Also, please share the version of InDesign you're using.
As a potential workaround, try saving the file as an IDML, then open the IDML file and check if the delay still occurs.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Abhishek Rao

I'm running InDesign 18.0 on two MacBook Pro computers. I run Ventura on a MacBook Pro 2021 with an Apple M1 Pro Processor. I also run Monterey on a MacBook Pro 2015. Neither of them display the issues you describe. I agree it appears to be unique to your computer.

Hi @Tony Seddon,

We understand how frustrating it could be. I believe the problem is with the Mac. Could you please contact the Apple support staff to discuss the problem?

Thanks,

Harshika
