Lost files working with iCloud on two macs

I always work on an iMac with inDesign. I use the Apple iCloud to store my files. Yesterday I used a macBook Pro in my house - same network and iCloud. I worked on my files and closed up. When I return to my iMac the files won't open properly - sometimes not at all. This must be a syncing problem and I gave my system time to sync - like 30 minutes. It's a large project and I maybe did not give it long enough? I have lost a big file. Any tips would be wonderful. Thanks guys.

I even have a problem that inDesign on my macBook wouldn't even open. I had to uninstall and reinstall to make it work. These are bad issues.
