Managing Figure Numbers

I working in a Book document. I have numbered figures (photos and drawings) through out the piece, over 100 in all. I've been using the Footnotes function and I'm wondering if there is something like that available for figures where I can reference the figure in the text and have it numberd accordingly like the foot notes -- including automatic updates if I add or move figures. My figures are already set up for automatic numbering in the captions text near the image but I'm looking for a way to link that the the body copy of the document.

You can do this with cross-references. Once you create the cross-reference, if you add/remove figures, you update the references and the numbers will update.
