Question

Master page "name" as a text variable

I'm creating a catalogue with multiple categories. Each category will have a seperate master page. Is there a way to use the mater page "name" (Under parent options) as a text variable such that changing that "name" automatically changes the text in other instances on the master page to mirror it?

Hi @robertrab:

I have to agree with Mike, this is not within the InDesign feature set. Keep in mind that scripting can do all sorts of things that InDesign can't do on its own, but that's definitely not my area.

My suggestion is to consider setting up neutral names for the master pages, and then just plan on edit editing the variables. This script makes variable updates very easy: https://indiscripts.com/post/2019/08/instantvariable-edit-quickly-your-indesign-variables. My docs are full of variables and it's a timesaver.

Thank you Barb. I'll take a look at the variable scrpit. It just might be the solution I'm searching for.

The name of the Parent page is not linked to text variables in any way I know of.

Thanks. While that's not the answer I was hoping for, it is the answer I needed to stop searching and get back to work.
