Question

Menu bar at top not responding

I've had some serious issues since upgrading to OS Monterey on my Mac about a month ago. I am constantly watching the beachball (really... several times per hour, and each time the spinning lasts anywhere from 15 to 60 seconds+). But the issue I've had this morning is crazy and I can't figure it out.

FYI, I'm a graphic designer in the print industry, so I'm not using any heavy-duty video/imaging software. I am primarily using InDesign, with imported items such as photos and other graphics.

When I click on "FILE" to try to "SAVE AS" or to export as a pdf, the FILE menu item becomes grayed out, but there is no pull-down menu to allow me to do anything under FILE. This is true with each menu. Sometimes if I click the menu bar a few times, the menu will pop down and then disappear again, so I'm unable to do anything in the menu. (trying it in Illustrator and Photoshop too just in case it's computer-wide... yes, it's only in InDesign)

I use Creative Cloud, so everything is completely up to date. I just can't understand what is going on. Please help! I own a design company and this has completely halted my workflow.

Hi @BECreativeSC:

I'm on an M1 with Monterey and InDesign 17.2 and am not having this issue. Resetting preferences is certainly the next step, but you can go beyond the keyboard option recommended above, if it doesn't solve the problem. Rebuilding the cache and preferences tends to offer the solution when the keyboard technique doesn't do it. Both options are detailed here:

Which (exact) version of InDesign and OS?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you considered resetting InDesign back to the factory defaults?
1) Close InDesign
2) Double click on Adobe InDesign's icon to launch it
3) QUICKLY hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift. (for Windows) or CTL+OPT+CMD+Shift (for Mac OS X)
4) When a dialogue appears, asking you “Delete InDesign Preference Files?” Click Yes.
If you don't see the question repeat the procedure again.

Will reply in just a bit, but first must get a couple rush jobs out the door while it's working for me. Quick info for both Derek Cross and Scott Falkner: here are some details in the screenshots.

Which version of Monterey? Hsave you fully updated with the Software Update preference pane? THe current version is 12.4.

Which version of InDesign? From the toolbar I can tell this is Creative Cloud, not Creative Suite. Are you fully updated? The current version is 17.3.

Have you tried rebooting? Have you tried saving with the keyboard (⌘ S), quitting, then restoring preferences. Press Shift+Option+Command+Control and you start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.

And now... after running Etrecheck, suddenly my menus are working again. Still... I'd be interested in opinions on what may have happened. I restarted the computer twice, zapped the PRAM during one restart, still the same problem until now, after letting it just sit for about 15 minutes.
