Menu / Toolbar Nightmare since Update to Indesign CC 2018

What a mess, every time I open Indesign since my last update the top menu is missing and my toolbar to the left is missing. It takes me hours to research every time how to get it back only to come back to an empty space when I open InDesign a new. Why can't the developers and product designers just leave things as they are and stop constantly shifting things around with every release. Its a real nightmare and nuisance to any ones workflow.

And btw, IS IT SO DIFFICULT to just add the option to show / hide items of the GUI (like the toolbar) in the "View" menu where any sane human being would expect it and not hide it somewhere deep in your apps eco system???? If I can choose to show / hide rulers aso, why not all the other most basic GUI elements for crying out loud???? C'mon, this should be such a basic concept!

Can someone please explain to me once and for all how and WHERE the heck I get all my old setup back? Can someone please tell me, why InDesign doesn't respect my setup after updates???? No matter which workspace I use, they all have the menu items (not the text nav menus) at top and toolbar to the left missing. I am just fed up looking for the most basic GUI items EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!!!

My overall user experience with Adobe is degrading by the day (in almost every app). I can't seem to do most basic tasks anymore: Cant open AVI's anymore in Premiere or Media Encoder (which is pathetic), the color picker has become absolutely useless in Illustrator and Indesign (because it doesn't pick colors anymore),  the color space managment in every app is different, Adobe DCs GUI is the most terrible user experience I have had in a decade and, and, and...

Sorry for my rant, but its really becoming super frustrating with Adobe apps...

I don't think things changed that much in InDesign CC2018 (the latest version is CC2019 – 14.01).

Have you tried – as a start – resetting your InDesign preferences?

Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

Thank you for your rant.  I found it very frustrating to be ready to work and find control panel missing, among other things, after an update.  This forum was helpful, especially the response to hold command + option + control + shift on the mac to reset.  How would i have known to do that without this forum???

@Derek: Thank you for your tip on resetting InDesign. That did the trick for me.

I am sure many others will find this tip and all other suggestions helpful.

In addition to Derek's advice about preferences you might also want to try trashing your InDesign cache files. This is different than trashing preferences and can be very helpful with problems within the interface itself, such as those you describe.

to do so:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which InDesign’s cache files are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the “Caches” folder. Within the Caches folder find and delete the entire folder “Adobe InDesign”. I find that deleting the InDesign cache folder completely leads to a lasting change.

For Windows Users: On Windows 7 and above the caches files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#]\<Language>\Cache.

I see that the property section in CC 2019 has moved to the side. Is there anyway I can get it back to the top?

No it is not. What you see is the new Properties panel. The panel on top that you mention is called Control Panel. You can get it back by going to the Window menu and choose Control panel. Or, change your workspace to Essentials Classic or, preferred, Advanced.
