Message: overtype properties are not available

Please can someone help me - I am trying to paste alot of text into my document, but even though there should be an overflow "o" or red X to show there's hidden text, this is missing and so I can't add the rest of the text. I just get the message: overtype properties are not available. I've tried closing, re-opening, and various options of pasting, or adding / deleting the text boxes, but can't figure it out. Pressing shift / option doesn't fix it either. Really appreciate some help. Many thanks

That stylized O is not overset; but rather an opportunity to click on and choose rare OpenType font features such as alternate glyphic characters. Normally you don't need that (indeed, I turn it off in Preferences > Advanced Type > Type Contextual Controls). You might like to explore Edit > Edit in Story Editor to see more detail on any overset condition.

Thank you - I see yes. I was confused - it's the red X that is missing. But it now appears if I just paste the text anywhere and then move it to where I want it rather than paste in place. I really would like to paste (using shift) so that all the chapter text automatically creates new pages without me having to keep adding more text boxes, but can't seem to figure it out.

You'll have to PLACE the text for that to happen.

Maybe you could experiment with saving the document to a new filename. Then Export to IDML format. Then re-open that IDML document to re-create a new, clean INDD document. Then test to see if the problem is still there.

Another common thing would be to experiment with a reset of InDesign.

Thank you - I've tried restarting again and adding placeholder text and the O appears with 4 options - (see image) but I'm not sure what they mean and if I should tick them?

But I'll try what you suggested - but don't want to reset and lose everything I've already done in all my templates & chapters 😕😕
