Installed trial version InDesign CS5 with update patch 7.0.4 on a clean/new installation of Windows XP Pro Sp3.

- InDesign CS5 Trial was the first program installation on the drive.

- Unable to run due to following:Runtime Error! Program C:\.....InDesign.exe The aplication has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.  Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I called tech support; however, they will not provide assistance on trial products.

Any assistance is appreciated.

The only one who can mark a question as answered is the person making the original post. It's possible marking John's earlier answer as correct also triggered an "answered" status, but I don't think that's automatic.

Sounds more like you were a little over-zealous in turning off startups. There are a few that ARE essential.

Anyway, I had another thought. You said clean Windows install. Do you have a printer installed? ID likes to see a local printer as default.

    Over zealous - guilty!

I did not have a printer installed at the first installation; however, during yesterday's successful installation threre was a local / network printer installed.

Local means attached to the computer, not a network printer. Should probably be on-line, too.

I see a report that msvcr90.dll is the faulting module there. That's Microsoft code that's been re-distributed as part of the Adobe products to perform basic Windows operations, and I would say it indicates the original installation is bad. For a licensed copy, the obvious solution is to uninstall and reinstall, but I don't know if you can do that with the trials these days. It might be worth a try, though.

I neglected to mention this was OS load and my second time around installing InDesign:

    - First I installed InDesign CS5 after many other programs were already installed - same C++ error message

    - I read several threads suggesting a registry cleaner, which I used, and it produced no results

    - Hence, I reformatted the drive, re-installed Windows, then installed InDesign CS5.  The install showed no errors.

    - An alternate post regarding Photoshop CS5 recommended installing the update prior to running the program; therefore, I downloaded and installed InDesign CS5 7.0.4 update successfully prior to attempting to open the program.

    - Once again the same C++ error message.  I even installed all Microsoft C++ updates to no avail.

Similar threads regarding this exact error exist on Adobe threads with no solutions.

You might not get an error if the files were installed, but are corrupt.  Reformatting is a whole lot of work for a trial. You could try running the installer again and see if it asks if youwant to repair the installation.

I highly recommend running MSConfig first, though, and turn off all non-essential startup items, then go to services and hid the Microsoft services, look through the list and turn off any you see that look non-essential (which should be most or all of what's left). Make sure Anti-virus and malware scanners are disabled, along with third party firewalls, iTunes, Browser helpers and toolbars, and pretty much everything except your mouse (Bonjour should be allowed to run) and I'd leave networking active, then reboot and try whatever you can with the installer.

Can you give us the EXACT error message, and any erro codes that go with it?

C++ runtime errors are usually basic configuration problems of some sort -- corrupt file someplace or similar, but it certainly won't hurt to trash your prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

    Hi Peter,

Thank you VERY much for your response!

Please find an attached .jpg of the error message.

    Here's the exact text:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Runtime Error!

    Program C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\InDesign.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Additionally, I heeded your counsel on trashing the preferences; however, because InDesign has never successfully launched, there is only one folder present, "CompositeFont" which is empty, n.b. I have my folder settings set to display all hidden files and folders.

    With appreciation,

Attachments are disabled. You have to come back to the web page and use the camera icon to embed an image in your post like this:

Take a look in Event Viewer (Control Panel > Administrative tools...) and see if there's any other info, too. It sounds like a failed install.
