Missing links and overset text?

I'm working on a photo book using an InDesign template from Blurb. When I went to print a draft, I got a message that there was overset text on a certain page, and so I looked into it. I made the text box bigger and everything fits, but I'm still getting the same message.

I also got a "missing links" message, and so far as I can tell, there are none. The project printed out fine. However, I still have little red circles with question marks in them in the Links panel, and though I relinked the photos, they're still showing up as missing links. But as I said, the draft has printed out fine.

Any idea what could be happening?

    Select the text frame and then: Edit > Edit in Story Editor.

    OK, my mistake--I found MULTIPLE instances of frames. I just wasn't getting them all.

    However, I still have several that have no page numbers associated with them. The "go to" option is greyed out both at the bottom of the panel and in the flyout menu. How do I find these?

    OK, I think I got it. I went through the document painstakingly and tracked the little buggers down, and removed them. They were all photo frames--none were photographs. I don't know if that would have made much of a difference, but I didn't want to take a chance.

    1 Check for extra carriage returns: Type > Show Hidden Characters

    2 For each red-marked image define the path to its original file: Links Palette > Relink ( you can use the Relink button, looks like a little chain, at the bottom of Links palette).

    The error messages are not very important when you print the draft, but for final printing, you need to fix all errors otherwise missed images will have low quality

    I fixed the text box issue.

    However, I know what's going on with the missing links. I based this document on another one that I did a year ago, very similar. I created a library so I could use the same photo layouts. The missing links appear to be photographs from last year's book. I must not have deleted them before putting in the new photos.

    Trouble is, I don't know where they are in the new document. Is there any way I can a) find them; and/or b) delete them? Or is it easier to just relink them, considering they are buried behind this year's photographs?

    I think the best way is to create an asset folder for the publication and put all your images in it, then you know where everything is and it's easier to change any, if you need to, and to manage your photos etc.

      Derek's taking care of you on the overset text issue but the images should be linked. When you drag and drop from Bridge, you're creating a link to the images on your computer. If you see red question marks, InDesign can't find the images. Although the file will print, you're probably get a low-resolution proxy of the image and not the full detail of the image.

        Re the overset text, you may have some extra carriage returns at the end of the text that need deleting. If not look in the Story Editor to see if there are any strange codes or something there.

        The red question mark means you haven't linked an image. Are you Placing your images?

        By the way, Blurb also supply a PDF Preset for printing (which you'll find in your InDesign Acrobat PDF Preset list).

        I don't usually place the images. I drag and drop them from Bridge.

        I'll check into the carriage returns. Where do I find the Story Editor? (Sorry, I am not familiar with all the functions).
