Mono TIF colour overlay workaround

I’m using data merge for a set of labels. The labels have different colours. I use a path ‘@image from Excel for solid block colours (JPGs) to achieve the different colours in the data merge. I’ve been trying to apply the colours to a white shape (mono TIF) in Indesign with the overlay effect but can’t get it to just colour the white shape and then not effect the photo in the background. I’ve tried isolation and knockout options but can’t achieve the effect I want. I originally tried setting an object style but couldn't get it to work that way. Is what I’m trying even possible?

Hi @defaultu97h80dzkpgu , By mono TIF you mean Bitmap mode in Photoshop?

If you set the area you want to color to Black pixels, the pixels can be assigned any color in InDesign—here I have the image selected:

Hi Rob, thanks for your reply. I know how to do the above. I would like to try and achieve the same result by using a simple flat coloured JPG overlaying a shape. The reason for the JPG is that I’m using Data Merge to create food labels. So let’s say the above yellow is assigned for the Chicken and Rice label, the workaround for Data Merging colours is to use a JPG. (If there is another way I would love to know). The attached image shows the coloured box (data merged JPG) overlaying a white shape, but it also effects the back ground image. I’ve tried isolation and knock but can’t find the answer. Any ideas, is it possible?

Can you share a sample InDesign file with the spread sheet and JPGs?

Can you post screenshots that demonstrate all the elements that are affected, the desired effect you wish to achieve, and the actual result?

Also, what are your InDesign and operating system versions?
