Nearly everything I do in Indesign is causing the spinning beachball of doom

I am currently using the latest version of indesign (this error also occurred in the previous version). Just about everything I do is causing a timer to appear, from selecting type to moving boxes. I have tried deleting the preference files a few times but this is seems to be a persisting problem. this is also only happening in Indesign no other software is experiencing any similar problems.

any ideas anyone?
