Need assistance with magazine setup (Indesign)

Hey guys,

I am new to Indesign and need some assistance with setting up a magazine.

The specs they gave me are as follows;

Trimming Area - 210 mm x 275 mm

Bleed Area - 210 mm x 279 mm

Safe Area - 190 mm  x 255 mm

I've tried it but I am not sure whether I have it right.

Can someone please assist.  If you could show me what the setup should look

like I would really appreciate it.  That way I can at least compare to my setup to see

if I actually set it up correctly.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

In your new document dialog you should have your page size set to 210mm width and 275mm deep (this is your trim size). Facing pages should be checked and your margins should be 10mm all round (this is your safe area).

Set the bleed to be 2mm all round. Although the specs you post have the trim width the same as the bleed width, this is wrong. Most likely your bleed should be 214mm by 279mm.

Good luck - and remember to use paragraph and character styles - it will pay off in the long run!

Malcolm

Hi,

Sorry about the bleed info, you're right.  That was a typo.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help.

InDesign is a professional application with a steep learning curve - starting with a Magazine is ambitious.

Lynda.com has a number of online video tutorials including one by Nigel French on how to produce a magazine. You can get a free 30-day free trial.

Come back to this friendly forum with specific questions.

Re your first question, briefly, establish the TPS (trimmed page size of your magazine) and add 3mm bleed to that(not on the inside).Set up your document as print as the  intent and select facing pages. Learn about the function of Master Pages. Ensure any images you Place have an Effective PPI (pixels per inch) of around 300PPI.

This is my second magazine I will be designing but the first time
