Question

New GPU Preview shows garbled screen image; CPU Preview still fine

I just updated InDesign to 16.2.1 prior to opening my work files for the day. When opening my files, I was disturbed to see everything garbled on screen and the redraw was completely messed up. Luckily, I became quickly aware of this processor re-direct option to the GPU instead of the CPU, and noticed that I could toggle the GPU preview off in the View menu. Toggling GPU Preview OFF (sending it back to CPU Preview) put everything back to normal again onscreen. When I go into ID preferences and access the GPU Performance panel, it tells me it has detected a compatible monitor and GPU, so I assume from this that I have the hardware to use this new feature. But I've had to disable it because I can't see/work on any of my files with it turned on. Is this a bug or a hardware issue that is not recongnized by the software? From what I have read, I have a compatible MacOS version and I have Metal, enough VRAM, etc. So I don't know why it's glitchy. I'm posting in case anyone else has trouble with the update version. If you do, disable the GPU Preview and things should appear normal.

Hi All,

We're sorry to hear about your experience. Product team is aware about this issue & working to fix this. I'd request you all to upvote & add your comments on this UserVoice post(https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/43404303-gpu-preview-broken-gpu-performance-not-working) & stay tuned for updates.

I'm having the same issue that I'll open a file and the screen looks crazy ... and I'll select view on CPU and it looks normal. I don't really understand how the average person will know what to able/disable to make things work normally. I'm tempted to tell all of my design co-workers NOT to do this update, if possible. I'm attaching a screenshot of what I see no matter what INDD document I open – designed or blank template.

I found how to fix it! Go into InDesign Preferences and there is a tab for GPU Performance. (see screenshot)  I unclicked that box and now every time I open a document, it appears normal.

Could you show a screenshot of the "garbled" view on your layout?

Are you using a Mac with the new M1 chip?

Then test InDesign 16.3 BETA that you will find in the Beta tab of the Creative Cloud Desktop App.

ADDENDUM: Just wanted to add that I am using a MacBookPro with a BenQ 27-inch monitor attached as a secondary monitor via a docking station. I was wondering if the graphics being fed to a second monitor in this way was what was causing the problem (perhaps the BenQ monitor was not compatible, I wondered) so I moved the window to the laptop monitor, turned the GPU Preview back on and it seemed to be drawing just fine there. I moved the window back to the big BenQ monitor, and it still seems fine for the moment. So I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from this experiment other than MAYBE when starting up the ID application, GPU needs to be off, and then you can turn it on once the app is launched? I really don't know. But I don't trust it and will probably keep it turned off until the next iteration of ID. If anyone else has redraw issues, I'd love to hear about them just so I know whether it's my hardware or a software issue that others are experiencing. Thanks!
