I am used to using Publisher and have recently changed to adobe indesign.  I am currently clueless.  Is there a basic template that can be seen for simple tasks such as inserting a picture or text box?

No. InDesign has a learning curve.

I suggest starting out with Sandee Cohen’s Visual Quick Start Guide: http://amzn.to/2yup36K

You can follow that up by watching some of the excellent training videos on Lynda.com. You can get a 30-day trial: http://www.lynda.com/trial/boblevine

Once you get into it a bit further, feel free to come on back with specific questions.

I agree with Bob. Both of those are excellent resources. If you choose Lynda.com, I'd recommend starting with David Blatner's "InDesign CC 2017 Essential Training" videos.

    Hi,

You can start by watching some tutorials from Lynda.com InDesign - Online Courses, Classes, Training, Tutorials on Lynda . You get a free trial

Also, latest InDesign versions allow you access to some templates that can help you start. When you open Indesign, press ctrl+n to open the "New document dialog". This allows you to view and start your work with some templates.

Some of those free templates are a bit questionable.

Do one of the Lynda.com courses (you can get a free 30-day trial) and it will get you going. Come back to this friendly forum with specific questions if you have problems.
