New to Indesign...need help with text

When I create a document in Indesign, it looks great. However, when I export to jpg, the image resizes and is bigger at 300 dpi, but if I set it to export at 72 dpi the text is blurry and unreadable.

I have to create a magazine ad that is approximately 5x5, they want it in jpg format.

Please help me understand 1. How to keep it from resizing and 2. How to keep the text from getting blurry. This is a screen shot from Indesign

I could imagine JPEG for a website ad, but for a printed magazine ad, that's just plain ridiculous! No matter what you do, you will get various nasty artifacts with JPEG, especially in the edges of that purple area, in addition to fuzzy-wuzzy text.

That having been said, I would agree strongly with Bob. Create a PDF/X-4 file from InDesign at full size. Open that PDF/X-4 file in Photoshop as 300dpi (minimal) CMYK. And then, from within Photoshop, save as maximum quality JPEG.

PS:     Any technically-competent publication (such as a magazine) should be able to directly place PDF-based advertisements.

Agree strongly with Dov’s PS but I have seen requirements like this in the past for things like high school fund raiser done with Powerpoint or Word.

Yup! And placing JPEG in those abominations is even more problematic!

That’s what happens when you rasterize text.

That said, you’ll probably get a better result exporting to PDF/X-4 and opening that in Photoshop. Save as JPG from there.

This is a case when opinion of topicstarter don't needed. Dov says all things right of the right.
