NSFW AI-generated alt-text hiding behind layers

What a joke of a title I just wrote. Was this feature ever tested?

I just had to find out that there has been an Alt-Text on an image published on my companies website that literally describes a black gradient as “a black & white image of a n**e* figure.” I cannot fathom how a feature like this ever made it to production. There is literally no way I believe this was tested beforehand, at least by (cogniscant) humans. Infuriatingly shameful. I do not care that the alt-text has been improved because I am still finding it from when I was affected. I’ve had it disabled since the moment I’ve been able to turn if off and it has still caused nightmares for me.

It is even more frustrating that it basically hides in plain sight and I cannot even find the tags. I had been working on this document for hours before I noticed, all because I accidentally moved the box. To keep me sane and also keep my job, I would love to see Alt-Text tags unaffected by objects in-front of them. I can only imagine this was done to reduce visual clutter in texts with lots of alt-tags? I don’t care at this point.

If anyone knows of a script to wipe ALL alt-text from .indd documents please message me.

@graphics_4075 , which version is this? In which version the alt text was first generated for this image? Could you please try regenerating the alt text?

I am using 21.5.1. I am not sure when the alt-text was first generated since it happened unknowingly in the background when this feature was first enabled. It could have been at any point after 21.2.

I am able to regenerate the alt text, but my point is that how am I to do that if I’m unable to find the alt-text in the first place since it’s visually obstructed? There is an option to hide the alt-text icon, so if that feature isn’t enabled, WHY CAN IT HIDE BEHIND LAYERS?? This feature has produced not a single thing but frustration for me.

I am currently on 21.5.1. I know that the generations have improved and likely won’t produce results like this anymore.

My main gripe is with how it hid in my documents unnoticed because the “T” icon was behind another layer.

The latest version of InDesign has an option to remove all AI generated alt text.

It’s probably been created by AI. It’s hidden in the preferences, there turn off the feature that does this.

I commented on the UserVoice back in May. Cannot believe it was that long ago.

Also I am aware it was generated by AI as mentioned in my title. The main pain-point was that I was unaware there was NSFW AI-Generated alt-text (or alt-text at all) in my document because it was visually obstructed, which shouldn’t be the case.
