Why are my section numbers turning into this when I export the file?

It is supposed to look like this ^

But looks like this when exported.

      You'll need to provide more information. Show a screen capture of the InDesign file in Normal mode, with Hidden Characters showing.  Show how you're defining the section numbers. Also: Please tell us what operating system (exactly) you're running. Please tell us (exactly) what InDesign version you're using.
