Question

Are you saying that chapters in an InDesign book are not incrementing correctly? Open the .indb book file, and use the panel menu to update the numbering.

Change page and chapter numbering options for each document

    1. Select the document in the Book panel.
    2. Choose Document Numbering Options in the Book panel menu, or double-click the document’s page numbers in the Book panel.
    3. Choose Automatic Page Numbering.
    4. Click OK.

or if you want each new chapter to start on a right hand page

Start numbering on an odd or even page

You can start document numbering on odd- or even-numbered pages in booked documents.

    1. Select the chapter you want to update.
    2. Choose Book Page Numbering Options in the Book panel menu.
    3. Choose Continue On Next Odd Page.
    4. Select Insert Blank Page to add a blank page to the end of any document in which the subsequent document must begin on an odd- or even-numbered page, and then click OK.

This is what I have been doing but it does not work. The incrementation is not automatic and sometimes it starts the following document at a non correct number and this is not regular.

I think it is a bug and the other problem is that on the book panel menu where I have my list of documents it always start at 1 and it gives me the number of pages of my chapter but it does not increment the numbers. Whereas in the previous versions of Indesign I never had this problem.

For instance I must number manually all my documents.

Ok, so it sounds like the first document is correct?

Let's start with the second chapter. Click it in the book window then Book Panel Menu > Document Numbering Options. Does it show Automatic Page Numbering? If not, turn it on.

Did the numbers update? If not, what happens if you select Update Numbering > Update Page and Section Numbers?
