Objects become invisible

When working in InDesign, entire objects (text fields, color areas, linked images) disappear and are no longer displayed. Not even their frames. The layers cannot be selected by clicking on the location where the elements are located. Zooming into the document or changing the view mode doesnt change anything in the visability of the objects.

However, the objects are still there in the layers window. Similarly, when exporting a PDF, the invisible objects become visible again.

I can make the objects visible again by copying and pasting them onto a new page or by saving an IDML and opening it. However, the objects keep disappearing when working in the file.

Tested with GPU turned on and off.

Thank you and well done, you did it! The update fixed the visual glitches for me. I can now set my UI scaling to small and reclaim some of my monitor space! Now this is a great start, but we have much more work to do. Let’s focus and get generative vectors working inside illustrator, by resolving the recoocuring ‘check your internet connection and try again error’. Sometimes signing out of CC and logging back in fixes this, but is an unrealsitic work-around which kicks me out of all my running adobe apps. We also need an option to disable the blue pop ups when you start the software. I’ll be back soon with more bugs that need fixing, see ya!

I spoke too soon, I am still getting visual glitches in idnesign which require to me press ‘w’ twice to redraw the page after every pan, zoom or interaction.

My experience in a similar way is that graphic objects, especially vector graphics, will sometimes disappear, or IOW fail to redraw on the screen. This annoyance goes back as long as I can remember.

My work-around habit is to do a Cmd/Ctrl+Plus followed by a Cmd/Ctrl+Minus to zoom in and out a step. This nearly always redraws the screen for me, returning the graphic objects to view.

Although I never can remember it; there is a “Force Redraw” shortcut, which I think is Shift+F5. Likely that shortcut is designed for this long-time problem.

Ditto. My work around habit for this bug after performing it, probably hundreds of times a day, for years has now become muscle memory. Here's a tip, save yourself a keystroke and press w twice instead.

I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with this for so long. I can understand how frustrating it must be when objects keep disappearing while you're working.

To help us investigate this further with the product team, could you please confirm whether you're still seeing the issue in the latest InDesign 21.4.1 release? It would also be helpful if you could share your exact operating system version.

If possible, please provide a short screen recording showing the objects disappearing and then reappearing after forcing a redraw. Additionally, if you have a reproducible sample file where this occurs, could you share it with us? If the file contains confidential content, please package it via File > Package and send it to me via DM using a cloud-sharing service such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or WeTransfer.

The sample file and recording will be extremely helpful in reproducing the issue and investigating it further with the product team.

This problem has existed for YEARS and it drives me nuts. I have tried turning GPU performance off /on. Update drivers. Clear preferences. Reinstall / update. No fix yet. Remind me again what I pay my subscription for? Updates that don’t fix bugs that are years old and instead just introduce more bugs, and add ai features we don’t want.

Following up on this, could you please confirm whether you’re still seeing objects disappear after updating to InDesign 21.2, as the expert previously asked? It would also help to know whether both of you are working on macOS Tahoe. If yes, please confirm the exact version, for example 26.1 or 26.2.

Thanks for sharing - I encountered the same issue with a larger (100+ pages) file. Also tried exporting an IDML file which seemed to fix the issue. Reoccured shortly after again sadly. MacOS Sonoma 14.5, InDesign version 21.0 and 20.5

I'm using a macOS tahoe 26.1.

The Problem accured in InDesign 2026 (21.0.1) and didnt go away in in the LTS Version (20.5.1).

Tried it on different other imacs/macbooks and problem was also there.

i had the Issue in an large document with 200 pages, and also in a small document with only two pages and 18 linked files.
