Question

Objects copied from ID 25 to 24 cannot be edited

If I create an object – even a simple box – in ID 25, copy it and paste it into ID 24, I do not get an editable object. The colours are not copied either. I only get a box with a content, similar to a pixel image. The other way round is exactly the same. It's really no fun. ID 25 is still not ok and it doesn't work properly with 24.

Save the newer file as IDML, open it in the older version and copy it from there.

From 25 to 24 is perfectly normal behavior and from 24 to 25 is completely unnecessary. Open both file in 25 and everything should be fine.

Hi @Haggi Hug,

Thanks for sharing your observations. What you're running into here is expected behavior when copying between major versions of InDesign like 24 and 25. Pasting content from a newer version (ID 25) into an older one (ID 24) typically results in flattened objects, as older versions aren't equipped to interpret newer features or format changes. This is why the objects appear as uneditable and colors might not transfer as expected.

If you need to move content between versions while preserving editability, the best approach is to export the file from InDesign 25 as an IDML file and open that in 24. That way, structure and formatting remain mostly intact and editable.

Let me know if you're still facing trouble even after using the IDML workflow, or if you'd like help walking through that process.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek
