One Button to control multiple objects

I am creating a Catalog of Designs to publish online.  I would like one of the first pages a viewer sees to allow them to choose a color of background (Multistate Object 10 Colors).  I can make that happen on a single page no problem.  I want to duplicate that Object across multiple pages (20-30 pages) - When I do that it only changes the first instance.  I did notice the object name changes, so I change that to match the orginial state, still no luck.  Any ideas how to make this work ?
