Opening PDF file in InDesign

I'm new to InDesign and most Adobe programs but I need some help with a document.  The organization I work for created a 2010 publication and changes will be made for the 2012 version.  I only have it in a PDF format and the person that help create this publication before told me that a PDF document you created can be opened with InDesign to make changes.  I'm not sure what file format it has to be to to open it but everytime I try to open it in InDesign it keeps saying that the file format is not supported.  Not sure what I'm supposed to do.  Please help.

Thanks

You cannot open a pdf document directly in Indesign, you need to place it on an Indesign document. For this you can create a new indesign document and use the place option from the "File" menu to place the pdf on to the document.

Moreover i don't think there is any way you can edit the contents of the pdf from within the Indesign.
