Page numbers all say A

I am trying to make a 16 page booklet and when I try to do the page numbering either all my page numbers say A or just the first one will say A. I am clicking Type> insert special character > markers> current page number and it's not working. I know I'm missing something but everything I look at or watch just says to do the above and the same thing happens or it will just puts that page number in and nothing else even when I try and attach it to the parent. So in other words my head is spinning because I've been trying fo ages.
