Page Numbers Displaying Mixed Lining and Non-Lining Numerals When Using Newzald Font in InDesign

I have an issue with InDesign. On my parent pages I have a text box which contains the marker 'current page number'. The numbers are viewing as expected up to page 99. When we get to page 100 and above, the third (last/units) number displays as non-lining when the rest are lining numerals. Why is this happening? Screen-shots attached.
This only happens when using the typeface Newzald… and not if I replace that typeface with something like Minion.

The para and char style both state tabular lining.

I suspect the font as well. Does it behave differently if you apply something other than Tabular Lining, e.g. Proportional Lining?  Toggle your Style Override and see if that shows something overriding your Para Styles.

In any case, I poked into the font and the designers have assigned Oldstyle figures as Default, which is kinda opposite of what would be normal in other fonts, so I’m thinking that’s confusing InDesign and giving you an Oldstyle “zero” instead of a normal “zero”.

Can you share a sample file?

    Hi @E5CC0,

Just following up to check if the suggestions shared by the experts helped resolve the issue. I also tested this on InDesign 21.2 on Windows 11, but I wasn’t able to reproduce the behavior on my end.

If you are still experiencing the issue, please let us know so we can look into this further and assist you accordingly.

    Looking forward to your update.

Text variables don’t wrap properly. If the frame in which you are adding the page number is small for rendering 3 digit numbers for the font in question then this could be the cause of the problem. Try once by increasing the size of the frame.

And does it happen when you type the same numbers manually?

Out of curiosity I downloaded the Newzald test fonts, and I can’t reproduce this (at least when typing manually):

Try a couple other fonts. If they display properly, it’s a problem with the font.

I believe that font is from Klim Type Foundry. You can contact them here: support@klim.co.nz

If it happens with other fonts, let us know.
